TECATE COPS AT IT AGAIN!

TextYwsterday FEB. 29, 2024 I ATTEMPTED TO CROSS through Tecate into the USA.It has been a while since I crossed that way, but from San Felipe, it is faster to get to San Diego Chula Vista area (Dr. appts.) than it is to cross through Sentri at Mexicali.
Their new motor officer scam is to pull you over for speeding through the FIRE STATION ZONE, I drove through there at about 10 mph. The cop said that the speed limit was 25 kph. As I approached the Fire zone, I kept a vigilant lookout for any cops either on bikes or cars. None were following me, and nowhere within 300 meters of the station. Yet, I was pulled over for speeding in the neighborhood. My Spanish is really good and I put up an argument that I did not see the cop anywhere near the station, and therefore how he could tell that I was speeding. NO payment was made, and no trip to the police station. However, Many of you know (those of you that cross at Tecate) the system of the line up to cross into the USA> It is a single lane, with the second lane bein used by commercial traffic. The first cop who pulled me over, was at the end of the car line. He had motioned me and two other cars to drive over to the commercial lane. Ten cars later, the same cop stops his bike and motions me and two others into the first traffic lane. There was a second police officer that stopped three of us who basically cut in line per the one officer's directions. Thew second officer was going to write us tickets and/or follow him to the police station. Again, I PUT UP AN ARGUMENT that the first police officer motioned us to get in the other lane and then directed us where to cut in line. Three minutes later, the second motor officer finally left. Probably to look for an easier prey.

Never trust a cop!

Last month I was driving south thru mexicali, having just crossed the border. Cop stopped me and said I was failing to maintain my lane. Wtf? Kept a phone on him, told him it was facebook live. He insisted it be turned off. I insisted video was going to stay on, for my audience. He gave up and let me go.

Most cops are armed robbers, nothing more.

Rotten to the core. Cops would probably be last people I would turn to if had trouble in mexico.

Respond to intimidation with intimidation!

When I arrive to my area in Mexico I look up the local police chief and give him a tip for doing a great Job keeping the community safe.
And let him know I feel that they are under paid .

I've never had problem and we've become good friends.

Also he told me that if I had any problems with an officer in the municipal to refer them to contact him

Ligüí, the location and name of California's third mission, founded in 1705. Full name: San Juan Bautista de Ligüí. When a different language group moved in, they knew the location as Malibat. That’s ridiculous!

What is your recommendation to transit across mexicali, tecate or tijuana? Should we pay the cops off in advance? What station do we visit to make our extortion payments that allow transit across town?

Get that. No police chief in Ligui or Ensenada Blanca. Must be Loreto police chief. Nothing wrong with that. Paying forward is something I would do.

A couple of weeks ago, I was scammed by a TJ moto cop for the first time in fifty-years when he saw I was asking a traffic control officer how I could get in the correct lane to the border crossing.

First time!!!!!!

I stupidly had some leftover pesos on the passenger seat in full view.

He scored that evening. Looking back, I should have asked him for an escort to the front of the line for that $50 he so gratefully received.

First time in fifty years is worth repeating.

The inline traffic cop did what he could for me. I hope he got a piece off the action from the moto cop who profited from my scam.

If tourism is a genuine concern, this sheet needs to stop. Asking for help from a traffic cop should not be punished.

Yea, dream on in an ideal world has its limitations.

If people don't make the effort to report these shakedowns to the local authorities and the local tourism offices, it will never stop.

It's easy to say, "Oh, that won't do any good" or b-tch about it on a forum, but obviously that doesn't do anything to address the problem.

Not all Mexican cops are crooked. I once inadvertently committed a traffic violation and because I was in a rush and didn't want to have to drive the 20 minutes out of my way to the office to pay the ticket, I asked if I
could just pay them directly. They said no and gave me
the ticket.

Gringoes used to be singled out by traffic cops a lot in the Puerto Vallarta area where I live. It doesn't happen anymore because the area thrives on tourism and expat dollars and the authorities obviously told them to stop the hassling. Now I see the traffic cops pulling over and ticketing mostly Mexicans, who have indeed committed violations, and only pulling over gringoes if they've done the same.
